How to cook for your dog

As many of you know, Hazmat was on death’s door a couple weeks ago. He had lost 15 pounds and his red blood cell count was at 12%. Normal for greyhounds is between 50-80%. “Incompatible with life” is < 10%. So I had to fatten him up and get him some red meat, stat.

Ingredients:
a) 1 lb ground beef (the leaner, the better, and organic if you can afford it - your dog can smell the difference)
b) 1 cup medium-grain rice + 1.5 cups water

Instructions:
Boil water, add rice, simmer until water is gone
Fry beef, mix in the rice
Total cooking time: 15 minutes

Cost of buying premium “lamb” and rice dog food is about $20 per week. He was not eating this.

Cost of cooking per week: 7 lbs of ground beef: $28, 1/2 bag of rice: $2. Total: $30.

I actually put about 1/3 of it in his bowl at a time, on top of a cup of the regular old dog food in case he is still hungry.

He’s gained back 2 pounds this week and his red blood cell count is up to 28%. Knock on wood!
